Welcome to the information pages of APTA’s Communications Sub Committee and the Technical Standards Working Group (TSWG) Feb 2012 update.

I am looking forward to meeting with you during the series of event and meetings that we have scheduled for this year and the first of these will be at the APTA Transit Tec conference being held in Fort Worth TX between March 20th and 22nd. The CSC/TSWG meeting will be at 10am on Monday 19th  March so I look forward to seeing you there!

If you are unable to attend, fear not! We will have an opportunity to meet in April at the Rail Security event being held in Chicago on April 11/12. (Timings TBC) Watch this space!

For our European members we have a first. There will be  a meeting of the CSC /TSWG (CCTv standards group) at the forthcoming IFSEC event in the UK during May (Date and venue TBA).

Finally, we’ll also be holding meetings at Rail Annual in June and of course APTA annual in October.

As you know over the past decade communications technology has been rapidly becoming a key resource in our nation's transit systems. Initiatives in areas such as computer based train control (CBTC), intelligent transport systems (ITS), security and surveillance systems as well as advanced on-board GIS and information systems have all seen the rapid introduction of advanced technology. These new technologies mostly form other industries; have enabled us to offer more features and services than ever before.

These advances, however, have not been without their drawbacks. Issues such as obsolescence, incompatibility, cyber security, reliability and lack of basic technical resources have been the norm in transit because of the unique applications in our Industry.

In September 2005, the Communications Subcommittee was formed under Research and Technology to assist the transit industry in managing this key resource. As we enter the second decade of the 21st century our mission is a wide as ever and demand for ‘technical information’ unending. None the less the three main areas of our task Remains:

* Promote the appropriate use of technology in mission critical applications

* Reduce risk in adopting technologies in transit

* Ensure that key communications resources are available for mission critical

transit applications

If you are a technology professional, a transit professional, or other interested party; please come and join us. We'd love to hear from you or better still, join in one of forthcoming meetings. The details of which are contained in these information pages.

The next meeting will be at APTA annual in Fort Worth TX, where we’ll be discussing new areas for the team to re-focus on such as control room software interconnect standards for the various ‘disparate’ software monitoring systems used in the OCC  as well as progress with our Cyber Security, ITS , CCTV and Intelligent Video standards. On the subject of CCTV, we will be moving forward with a draft outline on recommendations regarding the latest IP Camera technology as an addendum to the recently published CCTV standard, so there are plenty of areas of interest for you!

I hope to welcome you to our next meeting.

Regards
Dave Gorshkov CEng FIET
